Inspired by their school’s mission to celebrate diversity and respect others, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary, Baulkham Hills recently held Japan Day to enhance student learning about Japanese culture.
As part of the new HSIE syllabus, Year 5 students were given the opportunity to compare the cities of Sydney and Tokyo in a ‘Factors that Shape Places’ unit.
Held in Term Two, Japan Day was a joint initiative between Our Lady of Lourdes Primary and Gilroy Catholic College, Castle Hill. It was designed to make learning relevant and exciting for the Year 5 students, and engage Year 9 and 10 students in consolidating their own learning through teaching younger students.
One of the activities during the day required students to learn through inquiry about the typical features of a Japanese house, and answer questions such as: ‘How do people and environments influence one another?’ and ‘How do people influence places and the management of spaces within them?’
Such a mutual learning arrangement between the two schools showed a strong commitment to work together to facilitate and maximize student learning.
In addition to helping students learn experientially, it is seen as another opportunity to transition the primary students into high school on completion of Year 6.
It also provides the primary students an insight into what studying Japanese at Gilroy College entails, as all activities on Japan Day are prepared and run entirely by the high school students.

We certainly didn't hit the snooze button for our Pyjama Day, in solidarity with the Vinnies Winter Appeal. Coinciding with the Feast of the Sacred Heart, our community showed their generosity and love through the countless donations to help those in our community. Well done to our Faith in Action Team, who organised a great (and cosy) day to support the people who may not be ask lucky as we are.

Year 3 went to Lane Cove National Park for a day of learning about the Aboriginal and First Contacts as part of their History unit. Students made canoes using natural resources along the way. They tested them out to see if they floated. Along the hike, they shared stories about the First Contact People. Year 3 saw the remnants of what would have been a shell midden. Lines and dots were placed across our hands to connect us to country. Students were able to try and make spears by placing the sticks and rubbing them across the sandstone rocks, as well as some twining and weaving.

Our Year 1 students had a toad-ally awesome time at the Hills Shire Library Frog Club! They were hoppy to learn more about reading and how important it is. It was a fantastic way to encourage their love for reading, proving that books can help you leap into new worlds of knowledge! We hope this experience helps them ribbit through more books this year!

Our Faith in Action Team are leading our Vinnies Winter Appeal initiative. On Friday 27th June, we invite our students to wear their pyjamas and bring in a donation to support those less fortunate in our community. Every item makes a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable. Let’s show the power of compassion this winter!

What a track-tacular day at the OLOL Athletics Carnival! Our students really sprang into action, and honestly, their energy was so high, it was hard to hurdle the excitement. We are proud of all the students who all ran the good race and made it a truly leg-endary day!
